The 10th full-day colloquium in runic studies. Runic inscriptions in and about Finland
Monday, April 18, 2016, University of Turku, Finland
We are pleased to announce the 11th full-day Runråd runic colloquium, which will take place at the University of Turku, Finland, on Monday, April 18, 2016. The seminar is hosted by the Turku Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (TUCEMEMS) and the program in Nordic languages at the University of Turku in collaboration with Uppsala Runforum.
The theme of the seminar is Runes and cultural contacts. We especially welcome presentations concerning runic finds with connections to Finland and the eastern Baltic.
Everyone interested in participating is welcome to contact the organizer (kenwil@utu.fi). Please send titles and brief descriptions of proposed presentations to Kendra Willson (kenwil@utu.fi) by February 15, 2016.
The conference languages are English, Scandinavian languages, German, and French.
Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements. Turku is located 150 km west of Helsinki (two hours by train or bus). Viking and Silja Line ferries connect Turku to Stockholm and Mariehamn. Flights from the small Turku airport go to, inter alia, Stockholm, Gdansk, Riga, and Mariehamn (these fill up quickly, so be sure to book well in advance). A bus connection to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport takes two hours and 40 minutes.
Turku (Swedish Åbo), at the mouth of the Aura river, is the medieval urban center of Finland. It boasts a medieval castle and cathedral. Present-day Turku is a city of ca. 180,000 inhabitants with numerous museums, restaurants, cultural events, and walking paths. The surrounding area boasts a number of important archaeological sites as well as the Finnish archipelago.
The weather in April is unpredictable.
Please contact Kendra Willson (kenwil@utu.fi) with any inquiries.
We look forward to seeing you in Turku in 2016.
