Foto: Kulturhistorisk museum, Oslo (CC BY-SA).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.runforum.nordiska.uu.se\/blog\/the-end-a-biblical-motif-on-u-860\/\">last week\u2019s posting<\/a> I wished all readers of the blog a Happy New Year. Unfortunately, there are no runic inscriptions celebrating the turn of the year, but in my posting I did mention a runestone which bears a picture relating to the holiday this weekend, <em>viz.<\/em> Epiphany. This feast day is also called \u201dThree Kings\u2019 Day\u201d and commemorates the adoration of the Christ child by the three magi, sometimes known as Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar.<\/p>\n<p>The three kings can be seen riding their horses on the 11th century Norwegian runestone from Dynna N\u00a068 (Fig. 1). Franks casket. Photo: Michel Wal (CC BY-SA).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The scene of the Epiphany is found on another object, in this case the famous Franks Casket, now shown in the British Museum (Fig. 2). Lundberg, Kulturmilj\u00f6bild (CC BY).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps we have the same tableau also in Sweden, the 11\u201312<sup>th<\/sup> century Swedish rock carving at Sika, U\u00a0529 (Fig. 3).
