Invitation to the Eighth International Symposium on Runes and Runic Inscriptions: “Reading Runes: Discovery, Decipherment, Documentation” Nyköping, Sweden, 2014
All runologists and other scholars interested in runic studies are cordially invited to attend the Eighth International Symposium on Runes and Runic Inscriptions, Nyköping, Sweden, September 1-6, 2014.
The theme of the conference is “Reading Runes: Discovery, Decipherment, Documentation”. The preliminary program provides room for some forty papers plus possibility for poster presentations. The organisers hope that most of the papers will pursue the prescribed theme and will give priority to those that do so. A call for papers will be issued during early spring 2013.
Monday September 1 will be a day for arrival and registration. The program will formally begin with an opening ceremony at 10 AM on Tuesday September 2 and conclude with a banquet on Thursday evening September 4. Optional post-symposium excursions will be arranged on Friday September 5 to places of runic interest within the province of Södermanland. Departure for excursion participants will be on Saturday September 6.
We are applying to several sources for financial support for the conference and we hope to be able to subsidize a reasonable part of the cost for participants. At present, however, participants must budget for their own travel expenses, housing, and meals. The symposium will be held at a conference center in Nyköping where most of the participants will be expected to stay, but cheaper lodging will be offered, as well.
The symposium registration fee will be kept as low as possible, with a reduced price for students.
Welcome to Nyköping in September 2014 for the Eighth International Symposium on Runes and Runic Inscriptions!
